# What is a 'chargeable member' in Ruddr?

> Ruddr's fees are based on chargeable members: the greater of your active billable members or half of your total active members. All other members are free.

On the **Billing** tab of **Workspace Settings**, you'll see the term "chargeable member." It's easy to read this as another way of saying "billable member," but the two terms don't always mean the same thing.

Ruddr's fees are based on your workspace's chargeable member count. A workspace's chargeable member count is the greater of:

1. The number of active billable workspace members; and
2. Half of the total active workspace members.

Members who are not chargeable are entirely free.

Note that some Ruddr contracts have a minimum guaranteed number of chargeable members.

### An Example

This is best illustrated through an example. Let's assume your company has 100 total active workspace members.

* If 70 of those members are set as billable, then your workspace has 70 chargeable members and 30 free members. Because more than half of your members are billable, your chargeable member count is simply your billable member count.
* If only 30 of those members are set as billable, then your workspace has 50 chargeable members and 50 free members. Because fewer than half of your members are billable, your chargeable member count is half of your total active members.

To learn how a member is set as billable, see [What is a "Billable Member"?](/workspace-administration/billing#what-is-a-billable-member) in the Billing article.
